Semiconductors lie at the heart of modern economies, powering everything from smartphones and automobiles to defence systems and renewable energy infrastructure. Recognising this strategic importance, India’s Semiconductor Mission 2.0 represents an effort to reduce import dependence and integrate the country into global chip supply chains. The initiative is driven by geopolitical lessons from supply disruptions, as well as India’s ambition to become a trusted manufacturing destination.

India’s strength lies in design talent, a large technology workforce and a rapidly expanding electronics market. Semiconductor Mission 2.0 seeks to convert these advantages into fabrication, packaging and testing capabilities, supported by policy incentives and global partnerships. Rather than competing head-on with established chip giants, India aims to position itself as a reliable alternative within diversified supply chains.

Challenges remain substantial. Semiconductor manufacturing demands enormous capital, stable power supply, water resources and long-term policy certainty. Success will depend on sustained investment, skill development and coordination between central and state governments. If these hurdles are managed, India’s semiconductor push could significantly enhance economic resilience and technological sovereignty by the next decade.
